Elections for the 2011-2012 SBA Board of Governors will be held on April 20-21 in the bookstore.

Congratulations to Bevin Carroll (4L eve.), Joseph Beer (3L day), Yosef Klein (3L day), Hazel Gumbs (3L evening), and Justin Haber (ISBA rep.) — your positions were uncontested!

Candidates:

President (one position available):

I am running for president to unite our student body in the face of a difficult and trying time for law students. My leadership will go beyond providing socials and a Barrister’s Ball. I will search tirelessly for creative ways to improve our school’s marketability as well as student morale.
Because no one can accomplish this goal without the support of the whole student body, I believe that I would do the best job leading you next year. I have already demonstrated my ability to lead and work closely with the student body. This past year I served as SBA Treasurer. In that capacity I worked closely with all the student organization leaders and listened to their suggestions. With those suggestions, I spearheaded the overhaul of our finance process to make it easier and more efficient. Accordingly, SBA was able to end the year with a budget surplus after starting this year with a $40,000 debt. Additionally, my involvement in Kent’s top ranked Trial Advocacy Team and three other student groups makes me a connected and capable candidate for this job. We have a lot of work to do to seriously improve our school, and I eagerly look forward to the privilege of leading you in that effort.
My first project as president will be to hold an open student forum at the beginning of the year where all students will have an opportunity to address the whole student body with their suggestions, ideas, concerns, and questions so that we can work together to make Kent a better place.
On behalf of the “Rebuild. Reconnect. Represent.” Ticket I am honored to have your support.

Aeric Bauman:
My name is Aeric Bauman, and I am running for SBA President. This is not a decision I have come to on my own, but one that was supported by my peers, by faculty, and Dean Sowle himself. Everybody who has endorsed this decision knows two things about me. The first is that I am not the law school superstar. I do not dress in flashy suits, have the most polished resume, and I do not Cali classes. I do not write slick speeches or powerful statements. I am not in this to show off and make friends. Because the second thing that anybody who supports me knows that I am a man who gets things done. And that is what I believe make me the best person for the job.
Being a law student is challenging, but going to school shouldn’t be. Financial aid should arrive on time, and when we need it. Registering for classes should not be a stress-inducing process. The health insurance we pay for should be more than just adequate. Soap dispensers in the restroom should be full. As SBA President I will face every concern brought to me by finding out why things are the way they are, and how they can be better. Not every challenge has a solution, but every question deserves an answer. I hope to fix what I can, and learn the reason behind the things I can’t.
This is not a position that I am approaching without experience. I have strong leadership skills that I developed in college government, clubs, athletics, and two plus years of professional management…all of which have taught me to be efficient, productive, and proactive in achieving tangible results on a regular basis. As a board member of UNA-USA, ILS, and SALDF I have come to understand the struggles of groups working with the SBA. Furthermore, I know what it means to work in a group, to take orders and to give them, and the challenges of being many things to many people.
The responsibilities of this position, frequent and burdensome as they can be, do not intimidate me. Law school is about looking forward to careers and professional lives, studying for the Bar exam and finding jobs, while still keeping pace in the day-to-day of completing an academic program successfully. As SBA President I will do my best to make life as a student easier, and better, so we can all concentrate on things that matter.
I hope you recognize the potential I have to accomplish good things in this position, and will support my run for SBA president.
Sincerely,
Aeric Bauman

As a 1L section representative in the SBA, I have gained the experience and the inspiration that a leader needs to make Chicago-Kent a stronger law school with a more cohesive community. As part of SBA’s Finance Committee, I directly interacted with impressive student groups and encouraged them to pursue innovative ideas by appropriating funds to support conferences, send students to national and regional competitions, and welcome prominent speakers to our school. The SBA has a foundation for appropriating money, and as vice president I will make sure that that money is appropriated effectively, responsibly, and fairly. My personal interest in politics and my strong background in journalism have equipped me with the skills to investigate Chicago-Kent’s needs and draw in outside support to meet those needs and exceed our expectations. As vice president of the SBA, I will facilitate dynamic cooperation between students and the administration, effective communication among student groups, and a strategic relationship between our law school and our community. Under my leadership, Chicago-Kent will gain a stronger local reputation that will allow our law school to achieve the regional recognition we deserve.

Stephen Gardner, Ticket: Rebuild, Reconnect, Represent:
I am running for Vice President of SBA to assist in the implementation of new and exciting measures that students desperately need in this difficult law market. Kent students need more opportunities to learn and connect outside of the classroom. I bring an “outsider’s perspective” to the executive board of SBA. My perspective will remind other members that most of law school happens outside of the student organizations, and that there is a large portion of the student body that goes unheard. Also, as a rising 3L and a member of the Moot Court Honor Society, I have a lot of experience with school events and networking opportunities. Given this experience, I know what needs to be done to improve the current formula that fails to meet students’ needs. I am excited and honored to be considered for the position of Vice President on the distinguished ticket of Rebuild. Reconnect. Represent. We are prepared and able to work tirelessly to increase the value of every student’s experience at Chicago-Kent.

Vice President – Evening Division (one position available):

The essential purpose of the SBA is to be act as the primary liaison between students and the administration. I am running for SBA Vice President in the Evening Division because I know I will be a strong advocate for the interests of our evening students.
My mission is simple. I want to extend opportunities to evening students because we deserve to get the most of our tuition dollars. As an evening student-turned-day student, returning to evening, I have enjoyed the perks and drawbacks of being in both divisions. Although we pay the same rates in tuition, oftentimes, it is the evening students who are unable to take advantage of and/or participate in many of clinical programs, networking events, and other school-funded functions offered at Chicago-Kent. Other times, there are changes in school policy that primarily affect evening students that generally go unnoticed. For example, as of last semester, the library now closes at 5pm on Saturdays. Most day students are not affected by this, as most of their reading is done during the week; but evening students will full-time jobs rely on the weekends to complete their class reading for the week ahead. I will voice these and other concerns that the SBA and administration may have overlooked in making decisions to cut and allocate funds.
Although I have not been a member of SBA, I have a strong background in organizing and over ten years of student government experience. I promise to staunchly advocate for the Evening Division to ensure that our issues and concerns are taken into consideration.
I am running for Vice President of the Evening Division because I am the candidate who can take your evening law student experience up a notch. My mission as the Vice President of the Evening Division is to continue making Chicago-Kent a positive learning environment and making your time on campus as productive as possible. I plan to organize more opportunities for evening students to attend social and networking events, which includes informative career panels.
As the 1L Evening Representative this year, I organized an Appreciation Breakfast for the Faculty and Staff and participated in the interviewing process for our new Campus Bookstore Manager. I assisted the Evening Law Student Society in executing a Meet and Greet social and an Oral Argument Prep Panel for evening students. I work closely with the Bookstore, looking for cost-saving opportunities and greater buy back options for students. Currently, I am working on proposals to extend the building hours past the library close time, as many students could use the extra hour who have limited time to study.
I am confident that our leadership will bring new opportunities to our student body and enhance our learning experience. As always, I will make myself available to listen to your concerns and suggestions. I will be a passionate, energetic advocate for the evening division’s needs and concerns. I look forward to serving you next year.
The Secretary’s job is to ensure that students’ voices and ideas are heard at general meetings. The SBA exists to serve student organizations, and it is crucial that the Secretary be personable and receptive regarding their issues. Because the Secretary sets the agenda for meetings, he must efficiently coordinate these needs with other SBA issues so that everyone will be heard. A methodical approach that recognizes the specific requirements for proper consideration of each issue is the only way to fairly maintain this balance. I would be an ideal fit in this capacity because I am both receptive and organized. I’ve had experience working on events as a 1L representative for the IPLS this year, and can readily resolve logistics problems. I believe that those of you whom I’ve had the opportunity to meet would agree, and I’m confident that when the rest of you get to know me you will feel likewise.
Our ticket, “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt,” will run an exceptionally accessible SBA, ideally suited for the support and incorporation of new ideas. Thank you for the consideration.
This includes networking, social, and educational events. I will work closely with student organizations on campus to achieve these goals and to make Kent a better place for everyone.
As the 1L Section A Representative this year, I helped organize a variety of events including several socials for Section A, school-wide socials, and a 1L flag football tournament. I also served on the Finance Committee this year and have experience and knowledge of the SBA procedures regarding organization funding, supplemental funding, and reimbursements. As Treasurer next year, I will continue my dedication to the interests of the Chicago-Kent community by maintaining a balanced student activities budget and working with the school administration to streamline the budgeting process.
I am confident that the Rebuild, Reconnect, Represent ticket will work hard to enhance the student body’s experience by encouraging a positive learning environment and by organizing variety of activities for everyone. As your representative, I will advocate for our best interests. It is important that the SBA representative be accessible to his or her constituents. I would like to gain as much student input as possible, and I will work to implement your suggestions. One thing I think that SBA should do is to plan more social events, especially during the summer, when students may have more free time. One of our first goals will be to plan a summer social event. I also think that it is important that student concerns are communicated to the school’s administration. So, if students have concerns, such as why the library closes so early and whether it would be possible to extend library hours, I will certainly try to discuss those with the school and try to come up with positive solutions. Through the SBA, I am eager to work alongside a team that’s not only committed to strengthening our core educational experience, but also one that’s dedicated towards complementing it with events that will enhance student lives. Thus, giving students the ultimate bi-winning experience here at Chicago-Kent. Thank You.
An evening division representative should understand the significant burdens those of us who work full time, have families, and attend school are under. The representative should be a person who knows how isolated the evening division can feel especially in relation to the search and obtainment of legal employment.
As a full time employee in a non legal profession, I understand the challenges we face as evening students in receiving gainful experience within the legal profession while supporting a family and attending classes. I believe I can bring a strong voice to the SBA, and I will push for greater support in furthering the evening division’s needs for flexible legal employment options.

Classmates,
My name is Amy Ballard, and I am running for the position of American Bar Association Representative. This past year, I served as SBA Secretary. I gave much time and effort to SBA, to student organizations, and to the student body. I am confident in my ability to now serve as a representative of Chicago-Kent to the ABA.
As ABA rep, my job would be two-fold. I will serve the student body as an SBA member and I will serve as a liaison between Chicago-Kent and the ABA. As an SBA member I will continue to listen to my peers’ comments and concerns, help plan events, and continue to see the improvements we started this year continue to next. This year, the SBA helped improve technology throughout the school, we made progress on including a rec-room in the building, and we started creating socials that are more amenable to all students. I want to make sure these do not get forgotten. Also, the ABA representative traditionally sets a volunteer day. I will make sure it happens this year, and I will work to make it fun and successful.
I believe the liaison aspect of the position is not one to be taken lightly. I want to put Chicago-Kent’s name out there among other schools. I would like to involve our school and students in more ABA sponsored events. One simple way to do this is by being mindful of what is out there, being involved, and advertising it to all of you. I also can use this position as an opportunity to find out what other schools are doing, what works, what doesn’t, and bring those tips back here.
I am aware of the work this position entails as well as some improvements that I can make. I am ready to take on this challenge. I would appreciate the opportunity to serve the Chicago-Kent student body one more year as an SBA member.
Sincerely,
Amy Ballard
I became an active member of the Chicago-Kent community during my 1L year, and my positive experiences here have inspired me to advocate for our law school and its students. As Chicago-Kent’s American Bar Association representative, I will help institute and support the ABA policies that improve our legal education and our future legal careers. I will be an effective liaison between our law school and the legal professionals associated with the ABA, and my leadership will solicit the advice and counsel that will enable Chicago-Kent to pursue new and innovative ideas.

My name is Aaron Zaluzec and I am running for Chicago Bar Association Representative for the 2011-2012 school year. As the representative to the Chicago Bar Association, I will work to ensure that Chicago-Kent is an active leader in the CBA.
The CBA provides a valuable—yet underutilized—outlet for Chicago-Kent students as we advance in our legal careers. As your representative to the CBA I will work to facilitate communication between the Chicago-Kent and the CBA, ensuring that expectations on both sides are met.
It is important that our representative to the CBA listens to and brings about the expectations of our student body. My work with Phi Alpha Delta, the Kent Justice Foundation and the Student Bar Association over the past year clearly indicates my ability and willingness to fulfill this requirement.
I appreciate your vote in the upcoming election and look forward to being an active member of Phi Alpha Delta for years to come.
My name is Gregory Forfa and I will be a 2L this coming year. I am running to be your Chicago Bar Association Representative for Chicago-Kent. This year I have enjoyed getting to know many of you and have been actively working to increase the profile of Kent and the school’s general standings in the legal community. For example, I helped with the Lambda Civil Rights Conference that attracted well over 100 attorneys from around the country to our school. As your Chicago Bar Association Representative, I will work to further increase Kent’s reputation in the Chicago area, as well as attract attorneys to school networking events, so our students have more opportunity to interact with the professionals they will soon seek employment from. I strongly believe that I can help the SBA strengthen the positive reputation Kent has earned through its legal writing, IP, and moot court programs even further, and increase the career opportunities of all our students upon graduation.
